Guatemala 2012

When you read through the United Nation Millenium Development Goals report and view the statistics relating to Guatemala, you come away with the impression that this country is in utter disrepair and collapse. Although the stats do read this way and they have some unique issues surrounding their indigenous populations, when you arrive in Guatemala city you are amazed at how advanced their capital city really is.

To see the real, documented problems, you must travel out of the main cities and into the hills where the distinctly Mayan population exists as they have for hundreds of years. While they contribute heavily to the countries wealth in the form of laborers, there are some surprisingly brutal facts that have to be addressed by local and international governments, along with NGO’s and churches. Yes, churches! They are the Guatemalan ‘social network’ and will have to play a vital role in the battle ahead.

The battle that I allude to is malnutrition. *More that 1 million children under the age of 5 suffer from malnutrition in Guatemala. In this day and age, the global population should be appalled by the lack of effort and value we have placed on making sure that every child receives a balanced nutritional meal daily. RU4Children has been tasked with providing 10,000 children in Guatemala with one nutritional meal per day for the year 2012.
